In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
