Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these medications should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
