Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
